Name-Based Case Searches
For a Leelanau County name search, MiCOURT Case Search is Michigan's statewide public starting point. Last Name or Business is the required field. First Name, Middle Name, and Birth Year are optional extras. Enter only what separates one case from another. A business name belongs in the search only when it is the actual party or business caption in the case.
Knowing the court level makes a Leelanau County result easier to pin down. The statewide system offers a court selector and case-category controls. The local shared criminal and civil forms use county choices instead. Common names need care. Confirm the court, case number, and filed information before treating a hit as a match.
- Open MiCOURT and choose a name or business search when no court file number is known.
- Enter the required last name or business name, adding a first name or birth year only when needed to narrow the result.
- Review the court selector, case category, and display controls for a Leelanau County result.
- Open the matching public case information and record the case number, court, and status shown.
- Use the court office or public terminal when the result is absent, restricted, or needs confirmation from the official file.
| Field label | Type | Required | Leelanau County use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Text | Yes | The required MiCOURT name-search field. |
| First Name | Text | No | Helps narrow a common Leelanau County name. |
| Middle Name and Birth Year | Text and year | No | Additional state-interface qualifiers when necessary. |
| Court and category | Selector and filters | No | Useful for separating criminal, civil, probate, traffic, and other case paths. |
MiCOURT Leelanau County Case Search
MiCOURT provides the broad statewide layer for Leelanau County case searching. Its published documentation lists civil, criminal, domestic, probate, traffic, appeals, juvenile, and non-traffic categories. The public website may suppress excluded ones, though. The portal also warns that online information is informational and not the official court record. So a missing category or an empty result does not mean the case never existed. The official MiCOURT Case Search landing page states the public search layer and its limits.
MiCOURT earns its keep when the exact Leelanau County court is unclear. For a known file, or when something is missing online, a local index, the clerk counter, or a public terminal usually serves you better.
Leelanau County Court-Level Search
Leelanau County searches go fastest when you identify the court level first. The 86th District Court handles misdemeanors, traffic and civil infractions, district civil cases, small claims, and the preliminary felony stage. Felonies, circuit civil actions, and family matters belong to the 13th Judicial Circuit Court. Probate keeps its own register. After bind-over, a felony may need searching in both district and circuit.
That structure also explains a trap. A circuit result from Antrim or Grand Traverse is not automatically a Leelanau County record. Check the filing county every time.
Case Number Searches
A full Leelanau County case number beats a common name for precision. Under MCR 1.109, Michigan captions typically combine a filing year, a two-letter case-type code, and a number. The circuit records-request form shows 20-12345-AB as an example. Treat it as one form's format, not a promise that every court or record type matches.
MiCOURT's case-number interface asks for Year, Number, and Type. The local criminal and civil CGI searches likewise take a case year in ccyy format plus a case number. On the shared-court forms, enter the county as Leelanau. Handing the clerk a case number also speeds up finding the right file, document date, or record layer.
Leelanau County felony work may span two records: a district-stage number, then a later circuit record after bind-over. And keep the tools straight. A calendar number marks a scheduled setting. The docket register tracks the sequence of case events.
Leelanau County Blank Case Results
A blank Leelanau County result deserves a methodical check rather than a shrug. Confirm the spelling. Try the year and number instead. Pick the right county in a shared search. Make sure a felony has not moved between district and circuit. Then look at the date range and any public-access limits. Older circuit civil material can be index-only. Older criminal records can sit unindexed or on microfilm.
If those checks still leave you empty, go to the proper clerk. A public terminal at the courthouse is another option. An online gap is not a conclusion about the file.
Leelanau County CGI Search Choices
Leelanau County offers two separate shared local CGI searches for circuit records. The criminal search covers circuit felony filings from 1981 to the present. Enter a last name with an optional first name, or a case year and number, and pick the county. District misdemeanors are not in that circuit felony index.
The civil search takes party information or the year-and-number route, again with a county selector. From 1967-1985 it is mostly an index. From 1986 forward you get case information and the register of actions. PPOs are excluded from the civil page online. Neither CGI tool replaces MiCOURT; each is its own local record path.
Pick the source that fits the question. Statewide case discovery, the local circuit register, a district calendar, payment status, or an official clerk record request all answer something different.
Case Search Results Explained
A Leelanau County case result can surface a public summary, a docket-style register entry, a calendar setting, or a payment and status field. It may not give you a document image. Read each result as its own record layer with a specific job. A docket entry tells you an order or filing was entered. It does not give you the text. For the language that actually controls the case, the order itself is what you need.
| Case number | Identifies the court file and helps distinguish similar names and separate court stages. |
|---|---|
| Caption or parties | Shows the public case style, subject to the court's access rules and redaction practices. |
| Case type and court | Indicates the record path, such as district, circuit, probate, criminal, civil, traffic, or family. |
| Register entry | Chronological notice of a filing, hearing, order, judgment, or other event, rather than the full document image. |
| Setting or status | A hearing date or brief status is useful context, but the latest record and clerk confirmation control when accuracy matters. |
Before you ask the clerk for a regular or certified copy of a Leelanau County document, pull the basics together. Know the court, the case number, the document date, and the title.
Leelanau County Payment Search Limits
The 86th District Webtecs portal handles payments and status checks for Leelanau County. It is not a full court-file database. The main search field is Case/Ticket Number. You can also look up by First Name, Last Name, and Date of Birth. A brand-new ticket or case may not show up until the next business day. Patience helps. Pay after 3:45 p.m. and the payment may post the next business day. That may not stop a late fee.
The official Webtecs page shows both the case/ticket field and the name-based search controls.
Webtecs is no stand-in for the real thing. It does not replace a Leelanau County civil register, criminal docket, calendar, or a clerk's official copy. Civil fees and non-public cases cannot be paid there.
Leelanau County Legacy Case Search
Leelanau County records live in a hybrid setup. MiCOURT's structured state search layer runs alongside shared CGI criminal and civil indexes, calendar displays, a vendor payment page, public terminals, and the clerk's physical files. The 86th annual-report material describes a planned move from the Judicial Management System to the Judicial Information System in 2024. That means different tools can show different fields on different schedules. Match the tool to the record you actually need.
Two Ways to Search: County and State
Pick your path by what you know. A statewide search works well when you are starting broad. A Leelanau County local search fits better once the court level and record type are clear. Neither path covers every category, though. The gap matters most for a felony that starts in the 86th District Court and later moves to the 13th Judicial Circuit Court, or for a civil record whose older range is index-only.
| MiCOURT Case Search | Leelanau County local tools |
|---|---|
| Statewide public starting point with court and category controls | Shared circuit criminal/civil indexes, district calendar, Webtecs, and the correct clerk office |
| Useful when court level is unknown or a search begins with a name | Useful when the filing county, court path, and record type are known |
| Informational public data with stated category and date limitations | Local registers or status tools with separate scope, historical, and access limits |
Always match Leelanau County results to the county of filing. The 13th Circuit and 86th District structures are shared, so a similar Antrim or Grand Traverse result is a different local record.
Leelanau County Case Search Fallback
Online tools are not the end of the road in Leelanau County. The shared 13th Circuit information says public computer terminals sit in the Court Section. They are there for public review. Bring a case number or the party names. Ask the right office whether the record lives in the circuit, district, or probate file. Terminals still carry restrictions and redaction. Access to sealed material is never automatic.
For circuit records, contact the Leelanau County Clerk and Clerk of Circuit Court at 231-256-9824. The 86th District Leelanau office is listed at 231-256-8250. Probate has its own register at 231-256-9803. Phone calls, in-person terminal access, a targeted records request, mail or e-mail delivery on the circuit form, and district e-mail, fax, or drop-box instructions are all documented alternatives. Confirm the current route before you send an original, a payment, or anything sensitive.
Older criminal files may sit on microfilm at the Records Office. Unindexed cases can require in-person research. A blank online search is a reason to check the court level, county, date range, and access channel. It is not a conclusion about the matter.
Which Cases Stay Restricted
MiCOURT excludes several categories from its public website. The list includes adoption, juvenile and child-protective proceedings, juvenile guardianships, mental illness, name changes, PPOs, wills, delayed foreign birth registrations, and other protected matters. A Leelanau County probate or family record can show a limited public register. The documents may still be restricted or redacted. The specific court's clerk procedures control the next step.
Other limits apply too. Set-aside records, sealed files, court orders, statutory exclusions, and redaction can each narrow a Leelanau County result. The 86th public page warns that criminal-case extraction is paused while automatic set-aside records are reconciled. MiCOURT also warns that some courts display only criminal convictions within seven years. Do not scrape a portal or bulk-download data. Never read a blank result as a clean legal status.
Access rule: MCR 8.119 governs Michigan court-record access. Court files are not ordinary county FOIA records.
Leelanau County Federal Case Search
Federal cases will not show up in a state trial-court search. Leelanau County belongs to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. For a federal matter, use PACER Case Locator or the court's CM/ECF/PACER access. Do not go through a county clerk. PACER is the public query layer. CM/ECF is the federal filing system. Confirm current public-terminal availability with the federal court before you travel.
PACER's official pricing information sets docket, document, and search-result charges at $0.10 per page. Charges are generally capped at $3 per document. Quarterly charges of $30 or less are waived. Name searches can carry no maximum, so a known case number is the cost-limiting approach. The same page announces a scheduled January 1, 2027 increase. Verify the live fee page before relying on any number.
PACER access stands apart from Leelanau County court access. A federal docket may link filings and orders, while the county's public terminals and clerks remain the fallback for state trial-court records.
